Everyday Holidays

The day after St. Patrick's Day I asked my three year old what he wanted to do.  He told me he wanted to make yellow cookies for St. Yellow's Day.  I'll bet you didn't know that March 18th was St. Yellow's Day, did you?  Yeah, me neither.  But why not?

With Easter now in the past, we're entering a holiday drought at our house.  And my three year old loves holidays, he's already asking what comes next.  There's really nothing until my baby turns one in June, though.  But who says we can't make our own holidays?  Here are some ideas for everyday holidays:

• Choose one color and wear it that day, go for a scavenger hunt around your house to find things that are that color.  Break out the food coloring and make cookies or a cake that is that color.
• Choose a letter of the alphabet and make pancakes in the shape of that letter for breakfast, eat foods that start with that letter, and do activities that begin with that letter
• Have a birthday party for a family member who lives far away. Make a card for them, call them and maybe even have some cake or another treat to celebrate.
• Have a giveaway day.  Your kids can look through their toys to find things to donate.  You can look through your closets. You can make cookies to take to your neighbors.

Turning everyday things into a celebration can give you and your kids something to look forward to and turn normal everyday things into something a little more exciting.
